Product Description It's the mystery of mysteries, what's going on inside a pregnant woman's belly? That's what Jennifer Davis's older children wanted to know while she was expecting the younger. So to explain, she wrote Before You Were Born, a joyful life-the-flap book that tells the parallel story of mother and baby during the nine months of pregnancy. Illustrated with full-color whimsy by Laura Cornell, whose delightful work is familiar to readers of Jamie Lee Curtis's Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born and When I Was Little, Before You Were Born is a month-by-month count-down written in rhyming verse. READING LEVEL: Ages 3-6

A Baby Classic. A Must For Every Gandmother's Library December 8, 1999 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
As a grandmother of many curious grandchildren, I often reach for this book to explain a subject that fascinates them: how they grew in their mom's belly. "Before You Were Born" is packed full of facts and is at the same time a fun read. Jennifer Davis's text will make you and your children giggle. And Laura Cornell, who also illustrates Jaime Lee Curtis' books, has kept the subject light and whimsical. You can take the story as far as you want. It is a book we read over and over.
A must have for all moms to be! October 28, 1999 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
As a mom to be, I plan to read to my child and encourage her to love learning. I know from my next door neighbor's children (ages 2 and 4) that they are very inquisitive about what is happening to me while my child grows inside me. This book really helped them understand about the new life that was on the way. It's written in terms children understand...they loved the little flaps, because it made it interactive for them!
An adorable way to share the miracle of life with your child April 23, 1999 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Before You Were Born is a charming book. Although my child was only 13 months old when I bought it , I had to have it for the future! The illustrations are great and the content is cute and appropriate at the sametime. It brought a tear to my eye when I read it. A perfect choice for a child's "library".
Great for pregnancies after infertility too November 19, 1999 Carol Frost Vercollone 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
As a fertility counselor and co-author of Helping the Stork, I'm always on the lookout for books on reproduction appropriate for parents whose pregnancy began with great joy after tough times, and maybe even the help of an egg or sperm donor. This book, told from the mom's and baby's viewpoints, would be great for any singleton pregnancy. It is not ideal for mom-only families; dads may find the illustrations of their supporting role pretty funny - the whole book is!
Highly Recommended For Any Age September 11, 1999 Annette G. Rodriguez (New York City, New York USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My daughter is only 2 1/2 years old and she loves to hear the story over and over. She points to my belly and says she was there and look at all she did. She may not quite get it all now but she loves the photos and if you ask here where she came from she'll respond with, "My Mommy's Belly". Personally it's a great way to explain birth without the gory details - instead just the fun and beauty of the moments you went through month by month.
