Product Description
Women have made it clear that they desire a broader, integrative approach to their care. Here, for the first time, Integrative Women's Health weaves together the best of conventional treatments with mind-body interventions, nutritional strategies, herbal therapies, dietary supplements, acupuncture, and manual medicine, providing clinicians with a roadmap for practicing comprehensive integrative care.

Presenting the best evidence in a concise, accessible format, and written exclusively by female clinicians, this text addresses many aspects of women's health, including feminine perspectives on aging, spirituality and sexuality, specific recommendations for the treatment of cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, HIV, headaches, multiple sclerosis, depression, anxiety, and cancer, as well as integrative approaches to premenstrual syndrome, pregnancy, menopause, fibroids, and endometriosis. Homeopathic, Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine practitioners provide insight into the ways in which these systems manage reproductive conditions.

As leading educators in integrative medicine, editors Dr. Maizes and Dr. Low Dog demonstrate how clinicians can implement their recommendations in practice, but they also go beyond practical care to examine how to motivate patients, enhance a health history, and understand the spiritual dimensions of healing.

4 out of 4 found this review helpful

You could not ask for a more intelligent and caring guide to what is available in health care for women. This book looks in a thoughtful way at the state of the art in healing and keeping our mind, body and spirit healthy. Bringing Western medicine together with complementary approaches that have good evidence for being effective. Looking at the major health issues we are concerned about, this amazing group of authors present this material in a clear, straight forward way. I think it is a very useful tool in making informed decisions as we look at the explosion of treatments, information and products that are available.

5 out of 5 stars useful resource for practitioners and informed public   April 22, 2010
Sue (Tucson AZ, USA)
This well-edited collection does an excellent job of outlining and discussing the breath of topics that comprise the field of integrative women's health. The thoughtful integration of allopathic and "alternative" approaches makes this an exceptional reference/textbook, a `must have' reference for practitioners' libraries. Many chapters include excellent citation of current research evidence. Chapters about specific conditions will also provide a grounded study tool for individual patients and support groups to guide their thinking as they consider their own health care decisions. The comprehensive scope and direct accessibility of the information included in the text makes this an extremely useful resource to practitioners and 'informed public' in the consideration of both health and illness.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Text for Anyone Who's Serious about Women's Health!!   April 30, 2010
B. Naparstek (Cleveland Hts, OH United States)
The book is a collection of cutting edge, practical articles. There are excellent overviews on philosophy and varous systemic approaches (homeopathy, energy medicine, Chinese medicine, etc), as well as ways to address specific conditions (everything from endometriosis to fibroids; infertility to perinatal depression; breast cancer to chronic pelvic pain; urinary tract infections to headache and PMS; fibromyalgia to osteoporosis....I kid you not, Maizes and Low Dog cover the territory in a true integration of allopathic and holistic methodology. The information is wise, grounded, sophisticated and pulls from the latest research. It's comprehensive but accessible (and that's how we know it was well-edited). In other words, this is a must text for the library of anyone who's serious about women's health.
